For Inventors For Industry Technology Incubator Funding Opportunities

Overview

Emerging businesses face considerable challenges when bringing a new product or service to market. History shows that start-ups have a significantly higher success rate when they have an established partner to provide assistance.

The UB Technology Incubator, located in the Baird Research Park, supports the creation of new technology-based businesses by providing affordable business services to entrepreneurs. Since its inception in 1988, the program has assisted more than sixty tenants and graduates, boasting a 75 percent survival rate. Aggregate employment by those companies is 455 people, and annual revenues exceed $60 million.

The business incubation program provides assistance in four main areas:

  1. Flexible rental terms for office and wet laboratory space

  2. Administrative support services

  3. General business assistance in the form of coaching, counseling, mentoring and networking

  4. Access to UB resources, facilities and purchasing power

Why join a business incubator?

A study done by Inc. Magazine and National Business Incubator Association (NBIA) revealed that 80 percent of new businesses fail within the first five years. Fifty-two percent fail because of management-related problems, and 48 percent fail due to lack of capital. When a start-up is affiliated with an incubator, however, 87 percent survive. This statistic is four times higher than the national average for business success. The UB Technology Incubator, as one of over 900 incubators in the U.S. and one of the earliest, is a member of the National Business Incubation Association (NBIA) and follows the best practices models developed and supported by that organization.

Located near UB's Amherst Campus, the incubator is a 40,000-square-foot multi-tenant facility subdivided into offices and lab suites ranging from 277 square feet to more than 2,000 square feet. The space is suitable for office operations, research and development, assembly, or light manufacturing.

Baird Research Park, currently being master planned for at least 2 more buildings and part of a long-term plan for additional incubator and research park facilities, provides opportunities for companies graduating from the UB Technology Incubator to expand in space proximate to the synergistic relationships they have developed with both incubator companies and partners on the UB campuses. As a member of the Association of University Research Parks (AURP) and as part of a network of over 400 research parks in the U.S., and 1000 parks worldwide, Baird Research Park follows best practices for providing a campus-style environment for company growth and expansion. Both the incubator and park emphasize formation of international networks for furthering global business expansion and currently has companies or networking relationships from Canada, Ireland, Germany, France, Japan and India.
